The Blanket Yarn Crochet Moon is a beginner-friendly project that works up quickly using, as the name implies, blanket yarn to produce a moon that is approximately 9 inches in diameter.

The Inspiration
The Blanket Yarn Crochet Moon is made to coordinate with the Large Sleepy Time Crochet Gnome, a project that was designed by me and sponsored by Fairfield World.
In all honesty, the inspiration came because I love options in a pattern. When I came up with the idea for the Large Sleepy Time Crochet Gnome I planned, as you can see in the picture above, to also make an additional Blanket Yarn Crochet Star, and then as the pattern evolved I felt that there needed to be a moon option as well.
Many of you have expressed that you also like options and when I can, I’m happy to oblige! Whether you decide to make a single piece or all three I hope that you love your project. Happy Crocheting!
The Yarn
The yarn used to make the Blanket Yarn Crochet Moon is Yarnspirations Bernat Blanket in Sunsoaked OR Pale Grey.
Bernat Blanket Yarn is a chenille-like, Super Bulky, Size 6, 100% Polyester yarn that produces items that work up quickly and have the ultimate come hold me tight, squish factor.
Substitutions. Any brand of Super Bulky, size 6 blanket yarn should work well for making the Blanket Yarn Crochet Moon. Just note that due to variations among brands the finished size and appearance could potentially vary slightly. The pattern has not been tested using smaller yarn weights. - Crochet Hook, Size J/10 (6.0 mm)
- Stitch Marker(s)
- Scissors
- Poly-fil
- Tapestry needle
- Chopstick, dowel, or something similar to help with stuffing
- Yarnspirations Bernat Blanket Yarn (6-Super Bulky, 100% polyester, 220 yds/201 m, 10.5 oz/300 g): Color (A) Sunsoaked OR Pale Grey, used approx.70 yds/64 m
Gauge
Using hook size J/10 (6.0 mm) the first 4 rounds of the moon measure approximately 3.5 inches (9 cm) in diameter.
FinishedMeasurements
Using hook size J/10 (6.0 mm) the Blanket Yarn Crochet Moon measures approximately 9 inches (23 cm) in diameter.
Design Notes
- The pattern is written using US crochet terminology.
- The pattern is written in continuous rounds, it will be helpful to place a stitch marker at the beginning stitch of the round and move it up at the start of each additional round.
- At the end of each round, the number of stitches for completion is noted in parentheses.
- Further design notes will be provided throughout the pattern to help aid in construction.

Using Color (A)
- Rnd 1: 8sc in an adjustable (magic) circle. (8sts)
- Rnd 1 alternative: If preferred, ch2 and then 8sc in 2nd chain from hook. (8sts)
- Rnd 2: 2sc in each st around. (16sts)
- Rnd 3: [Sc in the next st, 2sc in next st] 8 times. (24sts)
- Rnd 4: [Sc in the next st, 2sc in the next st] 12 times. (36sts)
- Rnd 5: [Sc in the next st, 2sc in the next st] 18 times. (54sts)
- Rnd 6: [Sc in the next 2sts, 2sc in the next st] 18 times. (72sts)
- Rnd 7: [Sc in the next 3sts, 2sc in the next st] 18 times. (90ts)
- Rnd 8: [Sc in the next 4sts, 2sc in the next st] 18 times. (108sts)
- Rnd 9: 2sc in the next 3sts, sc in the next 48sts, 2sc in the next 6sts, sc in the next 48sts, 2sc in the next 3sts. (120sts)
- Rnd 10: 2sc in the next 3sts, sc in the next 54sts, 2sc in the next 6sts, sc in the next 54sts, 2sc in the next 3sts. (132sts)
- Rnd 11: Sc in each st around. (132sts)
- Do not fasten off. Continue with the options below for closing up the moon.
>Design Option: Not pictured, but a totally fun option would be to add a large safety eye and/or an embroidered eye and mouth to the moon. If doing so be sure to add them before seaming the edges together.
Stitching the Edges Together
The moon can be finished in a couple of different ways. The first will leave a nice single crochet edge. The second is hand-stitched and leaves more of a seamless edge.
Option 1: Single Crochet Edge
- Fold the moon in half, wrong sides facing, with the starting stitch at the center of the fold on one side.
- Line up the stitches along the outer edge.
- Sc the stitches together along the entire edge, adding Poly-fil before the moon is fully stitched together. (66sts)
- Fasten off and weave in the tail.
Option 2: Hand-stitched Edge
- Fasten off leaving a long tail for stitching.
- Fold the moon in half, wrong sides facing, with the starting stitch at the center of the fold on one side.
- Line up the stitches along the outer edge.
- Thread the yarn tail with a tapestry needle.
- Insert the needle from the inside of the work to the outside, through both loops of the stitch.
- On the opposite side insert the needle from the inside to the outside of the stitch, through both loops.
- Continue stitching each stitch along the outer edge as instructed above until the edge of the moon is closed, adding Poly-fil before the moon is fully stitched together.
- Secure the end and weave in the tail.
